West Lake, Hangzhou, China

January 21st, 2013

A taste of the beautiful West Lake in Hangzhou, the capital of the Zhejiang Province in Eastern China. Hangzhou is often known as one of the most beautiful cities in China. I visited there mid of April 2012.

The blooming and colors was very beautiful this time of the year. In the springtime obviously a lot of marriages takes place. All parks was filled with just married couples photographing their wedding pictures.

Well worth a visit is the Lingvin Temple and the Leifeng Pagoda. The view from the top of the Leifeng Pagoda is magnificent. Read the story about the Legend of the White Snake in this Wikipedia article.

Read more about Hangzhou here.

The music used  in the video is “Souvenir of China” by Jean Michel Jarre, one of my favorite musicians.

A taste of Dubai, United Arab Emirates

January 19th, 2013

The video is made from some of the images I have photographed on my many trips to Dubai. As you can see the city has a lot to offer other than shopping. I really recommend a trip out in the desert driving the big 4WD cars up and down the dunes – “dune bashing” as the locals call it. It is an amazing experience and well worth the time. Most of these tours ends with a belly dancer show after dark. It is quite nice but very “touristic”. The food however (often BBQ) on the tours I have joined has been quite good.

A saltwater creek divides the city into two sections – Bur Dubai and Deira. A huge number of wooden boats (Abras), carry people and merchandise from one side of the creek to the other. Some of these are taxi boats and the trip between Deira and Bur Dubai takes approximately 10 minutes.

Also an evening boat trip on the Dubai Creeks is very nice. As the city lights up at night the view is fantastic. Just strolling along the river side looking at the intense activity of the workers loading and unloading the boats.

This image was made last autumn. It looks like winter but is actually shot during the most colorful part of the autumn. It is a infrared converted image. We have reached mid January now and the scene looks similar in Oslo but this time due to the very cold weather. The IR image is from Stilla at Kjelsås in Oslo.

Yet another cold winterday

December 28th, 2012
This week we experienced another cold and beautiful Christmas. This image is taken at the same place as the image that was published in the UK Digital Photography magazine in 2010. You can find it here at my Website. The Christmas back in 2009 was extremely cold with temperatures below – 23 Celsius. This year it only reached -15.
The location is a beautiful farm near the city of Hønefoss in Ringerike, Norway. It is an ideal location for nice sunsets.
Which of the two images do you like the best? I would love to hear from you. Please send your comments below.

Sunset at Torghatten in Brønnøysund, Norway

December 20th, 2012

The famous mountain Torghatten

Close to the city of Brønnøysund has a huge hole straight through. The hole is made by the ice thousands of years ago. From the right angle you can see through the hole form far distance. You can even climb up and walk and through the hole. The view is magnificent from up there. You can see many of the small islands scattered along the coast of Helgeland. Helgeland is situated as close you can get to the middle of Norway only one and a half hour by direct fligth with Wideroe from Oslo airport.

Brønnøysund

Is my hometown and where I was born. I visited my family early in December. It was as expected cold and beautiful winter weather. Light condition this time of the year in Northern Norway is good so I decided to photograph the sunset on afternoon. All the images below are photographed from different angles within a very limited area. This shows how important it is to move around with your camera. When making landscape images it is important to compose your image so you have a foreground, middleground and background.

High dynamic range photos

But photographing against the sun is difficult as at least parts of the images often turns out too dark. No camera, not even the more expensive ones are capable of recording a dynamic range this wide. The sun is extremely bright even at sunset compared to the foreground elements like the stones which are in the shadows. I solved this by making 3 or 5 different exposures of the same image and process all of them together as a HDR image. I am using Photomatix or Nik Software HDR Pro.
